How to find website hosting details cloudflare

As I began a new project for a new client this week, I was tasked with tracking down the web host for the client. With no information about the client’s hosting service, I thought it would be a simple task. Boy was I wrong!

The first thing I did was try Googling “web host.” Clearly “web host” is not a search term that’s used often because the site returned nothing useful. Next, I tried googling for “[domain] web hosting.” This search resulted in the web hosting company names of other clients at my company that use those services. Then I tried a search for “[domain] web hosting.” This search returned the information on how to contact the hosting company.

With that information under my belt, I knew my next task was to contact all those companies. I quickly created a list of who they were and what their contact information was before getting into email with each one. Once I got them all on the phone, it turned out that some of their phone numbers didn’t work while some of their email addresses didn’t match what they said they were. Some of the companies said they were hosting this domain, but then I found out they didn’t, and on and on it went.

After a few hours of searching and calling, I was able to get a host name from one company and a phone number from another. The domain did not, in fact, belong to the host company I thought it did. It did however belong to a reseller of [OUR WEB HOSTING COMPANY].

Right now, I’m on the phone with the reseller company trying to get them to transfer the domain away from their system. I think I’m in for a long night. I will write another article if this one goes well.

First thing to look at when trying to find information about a company is whether or not you can use Google as a search engine. Do a search and see how many searches you get in results before do other things.

Determining the Web Host WITHOUT Login Credentials

This can be stressful if you’re looking for a quality web host. For most of us, the site might have poor performance or security problems. If a site has been compromised, there is no way to ascertain which accounts have been compromised and what information might have been accessed. Attempting to match up a website with an IP address and username will not provide any meaningful information at all unless both of these boxes are blank but that is quite rare.

Typically, we find that many new web hosts are not properly configured or they are hosting accounts that have been compromised. These accounts can be used by anyone. In fact, the details of the users of these websites often never reach the website admins to their knowledge and there’s a good chance that these details were simply washed out by bad actors.

The only way to know for certain that account and user details are not at risk is to identify the web host without logging in. To do this, there are several methods that we can use as enumerated below:

  1. Whois lookup – provides details about the domain such as Registrant, Administrative Contact, Technical Contact etc. This information can be used to identify the possible location of where the web host might be located. The Registrar field will tell us how it was registered (eg GoDaddy, Network Solutions etc. )
A Whois lookup is useful as it allows us to find the web host and contact them to report the problem.
  2. Security tools – tools like VirusTotal and PassiveTotal can scan the files on a particular website and provide information such as their servers, location and whether they share IPs with other compromised websites. These results will assist you to determine whether a website has been compromised if a review of the WHOIS information does not identify any other indicators of compromise.
